Simultaneous Suppression of Thermal Phase Noise and Relative Intensity Noise in a Fiber-Optic Gyroscope

چکیده

The short-term sensitivity of a several-kilometers long fiber-optic gyroscope (FOG) is limited mainly by thermal phase noise (TPN) and relative intensity (RIN). Increasing the modulation frequency decreases TPN but not RIN since it behaves as white noise. Here, we propose experimentally demonstrate that angular random walk (ARW) can be effectively decreased suppressing at its third-order harmonic using direct feedback to drive current superluminescent diode (SLD). Our simultaneous suppression yields an ARW 15 $\mu {\text {deg}}/\sqrt {{\text {h}}}$ bias instability 33 {deg}}/{\text {h}}$ fiber coil with length 5 km effective area 280 notation="LaTeX">${\text {m}}^{{{2}}}$ for measurement time 40 h.

Modeling of Thermal Phase Noise in a Solid Core Photonic Crystal Fiber-Optic Gyroscope

A theoretical model of the thermal phase noise in a square-wave modulated solid core photonic crystal fiber-optic gyroscope has been established, and then verified by measurements. The results demonstrate a good agreement between theory and experiment. The contribution of the thermal phase noise to the random walk coefficient of the gyroscope is derived. A fiber coil with 2.8 km length is used ...

Thermal noise spectrum of a fiber-optic magnetostrictive transducer.

We report the observation of the thermal equilibrium strain fluctuation spectrum in a transducer using a fiber interferometer. The thermal noise power spectrum in the range of 20-30 kHz of the metallic glass cylinder in this experiment is determined by the dynamic elastic susceptibility and has peak value corresponding to approximately 0.8 microrad/ radicalHZ at 25.5 kHz. The data are analyzed ...

Phase-reading, all-fiber-optic gyroscope.

An open-loop, all-fiber-optic gyroscope with wide dynamic range and linear scale factor is described. This novel approach converts the Sagnac phase shift into a phase shift in a low-frequency electronic signal by using optical phase modulation followed by amplitude modulation verify the theoretical predictions.

Broadband phase noise suppression in a Yb-fiber frequency comb.

We report a simple technique to suppress high-frequency phase noise of a Yb-based fiber optical frequency comb using an active intensity noise servo. Out-of-loop measurements of the phase noise using an optical heterodyne beat with a cw laser show suppression of phase noise by ≥7 dB out to Fourier frequencies of 100 kHz with a unity-gain crossing of ∼700 kHz. These results are enabled by the st...

Fiber Optic Gyroscope

This paper describes the development of Fiber Optic Gyroscope (FOG) for Space applications at LEOS. The sensor has all solid-state optical devices for the precise measurements of mechanical rotation. The basic phenomenon underlying optical rotation sensing is known as the Sagnac effect. In the Sagnac effect two identical light beams traveling in opposite directions around a closed loop path exp...
